In-Depth Information
All the details you need to know about this special grass variety stretching from Japan to Cyprus.
Zoysia grass is named after Austrian botanist Karl von Zois. Native to warm and temperate regions of East Asia, especially Japan, Korea, and China, this grass type has been preferred for centuries in golf courses, parks, and residences.
Belonging to the Poaceae family, Zoysia consists of approximately 11 species. The most commonly used species are Zoysia japonica, Zoysia matrella, and Zoysia tenuifolia.
Zoysia is characterized by its fine and dense leaf structure. Its leaves are 2-4 mm wide and vary in color from dark green to light green. It spreads through stolons and rhizomes, forming a thick grass cover.
Thanks to its deep root system, Zoysia uses water in the soil efficiently. It requires up to 60% less irrigation than conventional grass types. During drought periods, it enters dormancy and greens up quickly once rainfall returns.
It can withstand temperatures up to 45°C. It remains green even during hot and dry Mediterranean summers. In winter, color may change depending on cold conditions, but it fully recovers in spring.
Its slow growth rate requires up to 70% less mowing than other grass types. Its dense structure suppresses weed growth, minimizing herbicide use. It also has high natural resistance to diseases and pests.
Its velvety soft texture makes it pleasant to walk on barefoot. Its dense coverage helps with erosion control and protects the soil. It has a wide application range from golf courses to home gardens.
Deep watering once or twice per week is sufficient. Watering in early morning is recommended. Avoid overwatering; Zoysia tolerates drought better than excessive watering.
The ideal mowing height is between 3-5 cm. During growth season, mowing once or twice a month is generally enough. Use sharp blades, as dull blades damage leaves. Do not cut more than 30% of total height at one time.
Fertilizing 2-3 times a year is sufficient: early spring, mid-summer, and early autumn. Slow-release fertilizers with lower nitrogen are preferred. Overfertilizing can cause thatch buildup.
Aeration should be done once a year, preferably in spring. It promotes root growth and improves water and nutrient uptake. In compacted soils, more frequent aeration may be required.
Transition out of dormancy, first fertilization, aeration, weed control, and irrigation system activation are done in this period. Zoysia enters active growth and starts greening.
Regular irrigation (1-2 times per week), mowing when needed, mid-summer fertilization, and pest control are applied. This is the most active growth period, though extreme heat can slow growth.
Final fertilization, winter preparation, leaf cleanup, and reduced irrigation frequency are performed. Zoysia stores energy and prepares for winter during this period.
This is a minimum-maintenance period; light watering is done when needed and traffic is reduced. In Cyprus climate, it does not enter full dormancy, but growth slows and color may fade.

Cost varies depending on area size, ground preparation, irrigation system, and selected application type. We provide a clear quote after site inspection.
Rooting typically starts within a few weeks depending on the season. A few months of regular care may be needed for a fully dense appearance.
Yes. Thanks to its slow growth structure, it requires less mowing, consumes less water, and provides long-lasting results with proper care.
Its tone may lighten during cold periods. As temperatures rise in spring, it returns to a vibrant green appearance.
Yes, this is possible in most projects. We first analyze the existing ground, then implement with a suitable preparation and transition plan.
